Designing for Climate Resilience with Building Envelope Rainwater Management
Abstract
As climate change accelerates, design strategies must adapt to address the increasing frequency and intensity of rainwater events and urban flooding. Projects today face heightened demands for on-site stormwater management, reduced discharge allowances to municipal sewer systems, and a greater risk of water-related damage: all of which call for innovative, integrated solutions.
Building envelope strategies play a critical role in mitigating these risks. Solutions such as below-grade waterproofing (tanking), advanced drainage for window and wall systems, and blue or green roofs help manage rainwater more effectively at the source. When paired with site-level interventions, like water detention systems and flood barriers, they form a comprehensive approach to climate resilience.
The key challenge is selecting systems that not only meet current performance standards but also provide long-term durability and value. It’s about striking the right balance between protection, cost-effectiveness, and peace of mind.
